Paul Pierce, also known as “The Truth,” had his number retired by the Boston Celtics last night.

Pierce spent 15 seasons playing for the Celtics, helping them bring a championship back to the city of Boston in 2008.

Other Boston greats like Rajon Rando, Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers, who played such a big role in Pierce’s career, reunited in Boston to watch the jersey retirement of their former teammate/player.

Pierce’s former head coach Doc Rivers had some great words to share about Pierce, even comparing him to NBA/Celtics legend, Larry Bird.

“They’re so similar. Neither of them looked very athletic but they were. They both would beat you with their brains. They’re the two smartest players that I have ever been around.”

As Rivers eluded to, Pierce was known for his high basketball IQ on and off the court.

Kyrie Irving, who has spent just half a season with the Celtics so far, knew exactly how important a moment like this was.

“His legacy will last forever and now it’s in the rafter forever. That’s something as a kid you dream about.”

As can be imagined, Pierce had many emotions running through his mind the entire night. When asked how he would describe the entire night, Pierce had this to say:

“The Boston Celtics: it’s a name you put respect with, it’s a name you put history with, a name you put tradition with and now I’m a part of it.”
