Fans React to Paul's Post on Haiti
by
Evelyn Lau
Paul Pierce knows first-hand the consequences of unexpected tragedy.
No. 34 also knows the difficulties and trauma that can accompany such misfortunes. In a blog originally written for The Boston Globe, the Captain shared his thoughts on the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti, and opened up on how he overcame his own personal trauma after being stabbed at the age of 22.
The resulting effect of Pierce’s personal journey in his blog generated many positive responses by readers.
Gatorfan5 simply wrote:
"Paul, this is, by far, your best blog entry this season!"
Manorborn also added:
"It takes a lot of guts to open up as Pierce did here. No wonder he’s called the "truth." Celtics fans are lucky to have a captain as good as Pierce is on and off the court."
Those who were already fans of No. 34 weren’t surprised by the honesty he shared to the world through the blog.
Boston fan, Zach Browne, also known as sublimeZB wrote:
"These thoughts provide great meditation and context of this very real human tragedy. Also being one who has dealt with great loss, I really appreciate Paul sharing these insightful thoughts. Even though I don’t have a lot of money – it felt great to contribute what I could to the cause. If we all band together – even if you think you can’t help – a lot of small contributions can quickly become large.
Thanks Paul for bringing light to us all.
You have always been my favorite player in the NBA."
Dude35 summed his thoughts up simply but powerfully:
"God bless Paul Pierce & his family, for he plays every game as if it is a gift & is obviously a good dude."
Readers were also thankful for No. 34’s words and advice he offered and had nothing but well wishes for Paul as bdr61 wrote:
"Thanks for sharing this Paul. I enjoy your work on the court and off. Reading what you write here allows me to enjoy all that you do even more. A reasonable guy! That seems like a rare commodity these days. Keep on keeping on. All the best to you and yours."
Tasker2020 also added:
"Thanks for sharing. I remember hearing about the stabbing incident and was amazed at how fast you came back and still played at a high level after something so traumatic. It couldn’t have been easy."

"Paul—i absolutely love that you write these pieces. you open up & we learn a little more about you, its fascinating! i think you’re a joy to watch on the court & an interesting person off as well. Thank you!"
Paul's inspirational words allowed for his fans to not only see a player on the court but the person behind the number.

"Interesting insights, especially about Arenas and guns. PP34 is proof that not all NBA players or pro athletes think only about themselves and their money/image with no regard to consequences. Thanks Captain."

"What an amazing blog. I have always admired you as a basketball player, but through this blog you are revealing what an incredible man you are. I don’t know too many people who would open themselves up the way you are and I think so many young men (and woman too) will benefit from hearing about your experiences. We are so lucky to have you here in Boston. Thank you."

"Charles Barkley once said "Athletes are not role models"
However … Paul, you are one one the best role models in sport.
Thank you and keep up the great blog post!"
Perhaps SCFP, a long-time Celtics fan, summed it up best:
"Thanks for sharing . . . and for caring.
As a life-long Celtics fan (and Massachusetts resident) I feel we’ve been blessed over-the-years with some very talented players whom were also larger-than-life people; I’ve always believed you belonged in that group as well."
If you haven't yet, read, "When tragedy strikes: Pierce on Haiti and more," from the Boston Globe.
