The Boston Celtics are set to retire Paul Pierce’s number on Feb. 11. The team is also planning on displaying a tribute for Isaiah Thomas, thanking him for his years in Boston.

Thomas had the opportunity to have the tribute video played last week as Cleveland visited Boston, however, differed to have it played in their next matchup on Feb. 11 because his family wouldn’t be there to witness it.

A lot of NBA analysts and former players believe that night should be dedicated to just Pierce.

On ESPN’s The Jump, former NBA player Stephen Jackson backed up his co-analyst Pierce.

“I’m bothered that it’s coming on P’s night” Jackson was very specific on who should receive all the attention that night. “The guys whose jerseys go up in the rafter, the guys who put trophies there.”

Referring to Thomas’ tribute video Pierce said, “he should get one,” however, Pierce knows how much retirement tributes mean.

“After all the years I’ve been there. I had the opportunity to watch Kobe’s throughout the game and timeouts, there were a lot of tribute videos for him and I enjoyed watching those.”

Pierce understands the position Boston has been put in, but is looking forward to his big night.

“I was able to play 19 years. This is a day where I’m going to have all my family. I’m going to have all the people who helped me get to the point to where I needed to be throughout my 19-year career to be successful” Pierce said. “I just feel like that’s a special day for me.”

On NBA countdown, former Detroit All-Star Chauncy Billups was quick to defend Pierce.

“I agree with him 100%. I’m a big fan of Isaiah Thomas’, he did do a good job there. This is one of the greatest Celtics of all time and he deserves his own day alone with his family and with his friends.”
